Oh my, what a day! One of those days that you just want to say "Can we all go back to bed and have a do-over?" That was today.
When I woke up this morning I literally thought, "We don't have anything we have to do today? How should we fill our time? The park? The library? Playdate with friends?" I took the boys on our morning walk and decided to do the long loop- which is all the way to my parents house and back. It was hot and sweaty climbing the hill so we stopped at my parents house for a little bit so I could breathe. As we were leaving I noticed that the window well was FULL of water. Quickly I realized that when we were there on Sunday night (36 hours ago) the boys must have been playing with the hose and left it on inside the window well! My mom and I quickly bailed out the window well and then went down to the basement, hoping there wouldn't be too much damage down there.
But there was. Water everywhere! The room (Chase's old room) right under that window was completely flooded, paint peeling, carpet completely soaked. So was the bedroom next door. And the hall. And then just outside the bedrooms in the big playroom is the pit- which had about 4-5 inches of standing water in it. It was a huge huge mess. We started bailing and soaking up water immediately- some kind neighbors came over to lend a hang (and wet vacs and fans) and we all just worked and worked.
Let me tell you I was so frustrated! Frustrated with the kids, who have been told over and over that they are not allowed to play with the hose. And probably even more frustrated with myself, that I wasn't watching them closely enough to prevent all this.
Eventually disaster clean-up came and finished off the job and inspected the damage. The dry wall and pad have to be replaced, the paint then has to be redone and some of the furniture is ruined! So much damage from such a stupid mistake. Luckily, my parents homeowners insurance will cover most of it, otherwise it could have been worse. Needless to say, Ben and I feel terrible about it. Nothing makes you feel like a failure as a parent quite like having your kids flood someone else's house. (Although my parents have been very sweet and understanding about all of this- probably because they love those grandkids so dang much.)
At one point I left to go get lunch for all the kind people who came to help. I'm running into the grocery store, still a sweaty mess from my morning exercise and then hours of bailing buckets of water out of the basement. Neither of my kids has shoes on (so I had to carry both of them through the parking lot) and Hudson was still in his pajamas. I'm sure we were a site to see!
When we were all home that evening things got even messier. Our newly potty trained Hudson had some digestive trouble and let's just say I'm glad we decided on dark carpet :) More messes to clean up. Really gross messes.
And on top of all that, Ben found out today that he boss (who he really likes working with) is quitting in two weeks.
So all in all, it was a pretty crazy day. A sweet neighbor reminded me (twice) that accidents happen and it could have been much worse. These are all just things and everything can be fixed and replaced. Even still, can we just pretend today didn't happen?

My reaction is still just UGH. So sorry. Blech. I totally get the need for 'do-over' days - I hope tomorrow is boring and quiet as can be!! xoxo!!
